What the July 25, 2024 Board Tells You Before You Solve It
The gaps are the first clue
The board shows the word breaks before you guess anything. Today that is 3-1-5 — 3 words of those lengths. A one or two letter word is almost always a, I, of, to or in, and filling those first costs nothing.
Purple is the tile that matters
Green and yellow behave like Wordle. Purple is unique to Phrazle: the letter is somewhere in the phrase but not in the word you put it in. It tells you to move a letter across a word break, which is where most guesses are wasted.
Guess whole idioms, not words
Phrazle answers are set phrases — sayings, idioms, titles. Once two or three words are placed, say the phrase out loud rather than solving the remaining slots letter by letter. Older boards in the Phrazle archive show how short most answers are.
Three Habits That Solve Phrazle Faster
Read the word lengths before you guess
Phrazle shows the word breaks from the very start. A 2-4-3 shape is a far smaller search space than "some phrase", and the one and two letter slots are nearly always a, I, of, to, in or the.
Purple means move the letter, not drop it
Green and yellow work as they do in Wordle. Purple is the tile Wordle does not have: the letter is somewhere in the phrase but not in the word you put it in. Most wasted guesses come from abandoning a purple letter instead of shifting it one word along.
Say it out loud once two words land
Answers are set phrases — idioms, sayings, titles. They complete themselves in your ear long before they complete on the grid, so guess the whole phrase rather than solving the remaining slots letter by letter. The archive shows how short most of them are.
Practise on a solved board
Every page in the Phrazle archive shows the word and letter pattern beside the answer, which is the part worth studying.
How to Solve a Phrazle Phrase
Three guesses of information beats one guess of luck.
Read the shape first
The word lengths are visible from the start. Note them before guessing — they rule out most phrases immediately.
Spend guess one on common letters
Open with a phrase rich in E, A, R, T and O across several words. You are mapping the phrase, not trying to win on the first line.
Move purple letters across words
A purple tile means the right letter is in the wrong word. Re-place it in a different word before changing the letter itself.
